Tips for Cleaning Your Tires

Your tires and wheels get just as dirty as the rest of your car, so here are a few tips that will help you clean them. Start with your tires. When you wash your car, it's always best to start with your wheels and tires. That way, you won't splash dirty water or brake dust onto parts of your car that have already been cleaned.

Choose a good cleaner and tire brush. The cleaner you choose for your wheels will depend on what kind of wheels they are and how dirty they've gotten. You can use a harsher cleaner on chrome or roughcast aluminum wheels, but you might need to use something gentler if you have anything else. The label on your cleaner will tell you if it's appropriate for your wheels. You may also need something stronger if you have brake dust caked onto your wheels. In any case, a stiff-bristled tire brush will be necessary for the really dirty spots on your wheels.

Clean one tire at a time. To keep your cleaner from drying out before you have a chance to clean your wheels, make sure you clean only one tire at a time. Once one is clean, you can move on to the next one.

Wax your tires and wheels. Once your wheels and tires are dry, it's time to apply a coat of wax to protect them. This works much like car wax, and it can be applied with a soft sponge designed for waxing and detailing your car and wheels.
