Understanding the Operation of a Timing Belt

An engine is a complex machine. As the owner of a car, you need to understand some of the basics associated with an engine. One element of an internal combustion engine you need to be familiar with is a timing belt.

A timing belt is an element of an engine that is designed to ensure that valves open and close properly in conjunction with a cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes. This precision movement is vital to the operation of an engine. A timing belt is also known as a timing chain or cambelt. It is designed with teeth on one side. It coordinates the rotation of the crankshaft with the camshafts.
