Are There Different Types of Ignition Systems?

Since the invention of the automobile, many ignition systems have been used. Early inventors realized the importance of providing a continuous spark inside a combustion chamber. Otherwise, the vehicle would not run. Initial ignition is paramount and was originally created by a hand crank. The automotive industry did not take long to invent a dependable ignition system that took less physical effort.

Up until 1974, the ignition system consisted of mechanical parts. Though dependable, each part could contribute to an ignition problem. In 1975, the electronic ignition system was introduced. With the establishment of environmental exhaust controls, the electronic ignition became standard. Recent innovations produced the distributorless ignition system with minimal maintenance moving parts, requiring less maintenance than the former systems.
